In DnD 5 Edition there is nine race you can chose for the character. The race divided by two types, common and uncommon race. The common race is Human,Elf,Halfling,and Dwarf. The uncommon race is Dragonborn,Gnome, Half-elf, Half-orc, and Tiefling. The character race is very important because race affects your ability scores and traits but also providing cues about the character background and roleplay. Lets take a simple example:
a Half orc walking with an axe will make most common person running away because they fear the half-orc will kill them, while actually the half-orc was actually returned home from cutting down tree as lumberjack.
meanwhile a dwarf walking with an axe will not make anyone panic. (axe and hammer is cultural thing for dwarf, and dwarf is a common race, many has saw them walking around with axe or hammer).
now after we knew the important of race, i will review the common race of dnd 5e in roleplay term.
- Dwarf. Bold and hardy, dwarves are known as skilled warriors, miners, and workers of stone and metal, so if you want to roleplay like Gimli in Lord of the Ring you can choose dwarf your character race.
Dwarves can live to be more than 400 years old, so the oldest living dwarves often remember a very different
world. imagine your character 250 years old veteran warrior that find a ruins with the party and find out that it was your home 150 years ago, how interesting is that? the word always constantly changing while you digging gold in a cave for 50 year, lol. - Elf. Elves are a magical people of otherworldly grace, living in the world but not entirely part of it. They live in
places of ethereal beauty, in the midst of ancient forests ar in silvery spires glittering with faerie light, where
soft music drifts through the air and gentle fragrances waft on the breeze. Elves lave nature and magic, art
and artistry, music and poetry, and the good things of the world. (Player Handbook 5e pages 21)
Elves can live over 700 years, giving them a broad perspective on events that might trouble the shorter lived races more deeply,
Remember Legolas also from Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit? how he gracefully fighting orc with bow that (almost)never miss. Elf receive a weapon training (since they live very long) and make them proficient with longsword, shortsword, shortbow, and longbow, so if you want to roleplay like legolas you can chose an elf as your charcter race
also remember that one time legolas gracefully running while the bridge collapse and killing the orc?, that’s so epic. want an epic & Graceful character ?, Choose Elf
